Otolaryngologists diagnose and treat sinus, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, and upper pharynx (mouth and throat) disorders, as well as neck and face structures, as well as many primary care concerns in children and adults. The ears— the loss of hearing affects one in ten North American people. Treatment of ear conditions is the special domain of otolaryngologists. We are trained in vision, ear infections, coordination problems, ear noise (tinnitus), nerve pain, and facial and cranial nerve disorders, both in medical and surgical care. Otolaryngologists also treat external and internal ear congenital (birth) conditions. The nose— Every year, nearly 35 million people develop chronic sinusitis, making it one of America's most common health issues. One of the key expertise of otolaryngologists is the treatment of the nasal cavity and sinuses. Nasal environment control requires allergies and scent sensation. Breathing through the nose and the shape of it is also part of the training of otolaryngologists. The throat — Communicating (talking and singing) and eating a meal are all part of this vital area. Expertise in the management of larynx (voice box) and upper aero-digestive tract or esophagus, including speech and swallowing disorders, is often special to otolaryngologists. The head and neck — This body center includes the major nerves that control the sight, smell, hearing, and face. Otolaryngologists are trained in the head and neck area to treat infectious diseases, both benign and malignant (cancerous) tumors, facial trauma, and facial deformities. Both cosmetic plastic and reconstructive operations are performed.
